You are what you love, not what loves you. I love this quote for a couple reasons. First off, it's a really good philosophy in that it doesn't matter what others think of you, and all you need to do is focus on the things you love. It helps to keep you focused on the things that actually matter, and that's an important lesson, it's important not stray too far from the things that really drive your life. However, the second reason is where the quote really shines for me.
More than just a nice happy philosophy, that quote is a literal description of life. You literally ARE the things you love. That activity that makes you feel alive, the reason you love it so much is because it is the real you. When you're in that flowing creative state, you are tapping into the core of who you are as a person. No matter what anybody else says, if you feel a calling to take on a specific career, or take your life in a certain direction, it's because that is what you were created to do. If you take some time every day to shut off all your distractions and just listen to your heart, you'll find it's easy to tap into what your calling is.
It's also important to not stay caught up on one thing. Your calling can change, but it usually stays related. For instance, for years my calling was creating music, and in many ways it still is, but now I'm feeling called to write this blog. I'm also pulled towards writing films, and towards telling a story with sound. My calling seemed like it was music before, but really my calling was just to tell stories. All that has changed was my medium for telling those stories, but the stories have always been there for as long as I knew how to write. So when you feel pulled to do one thing, and then suddenly you lose inspiration for that thing and want to move to something else, take a step back and you'll usually notice that the two things are related on a much larger scale. Even if the two things are completely unrelated though, it's best to just follow your instincts, because that little voice inside of you knows you more than you know yourself.
Question: What do you love to do?
